Ebook About
The third volume of the prime minister’s history of Britain follows the nation’s ascent as a world power and its response to the threat of Napoleon.   In the “wilderness” years after Sir Winston Churchill unflinchingly guided his country through World War II, he turned his masterful hand to an exhaustive history of the country he loved above all else. And the world discovered that this brilliant military strategist was an equally brilliant storyteller. In 1953, the great man was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for “his mastery of historical and biographical description as well as for brilliant oratory in defending exalted human values.”   This third of four volumes explores Britain’s rise to world leadership during the eighteenth-century Age of Revolution. With characteristic eloquence, Churchill recounts the plunging of the South Seas company stock, the Spanish and Austrian Successions, the Treaty of Utrecht, the Seven Years’ War, and the American and French Revolutions. This sweeping history is a must-read for history buffs.   “This history will endure; not only because Sir Winston has written it, but also because of its own inherent virtues—its narrative power, its fine judgment of war and politics, of soldiers and statesmen, and even more because it reflects a tradition of what Englishmen in the hey-day of their empire thought and felt about their country’s past.” —The Daily Telegraph

Book The Age of Revolution (A History of the English-Speaking Peoples Book 3) Review :

I am an amateur historian but I take it seriously. Why 5 stars. Churchill is a great writer. He explains events succinctly and accurately. You learn a few new (Old) words for your personal vocabulary. The American Revolution is a good sample. I have read much about it. He explains it FROM THE BRITISH POINT OF VIEW. I finally realized what the whole war was about, exactly. More importantly his history fits snuggly into world history so, finally, I could put it into my mental filing cabinet of world history.I have read all of his English Speaking Books during the pandemic. Number one is the least interesting to me. Book 3 and 4K are great. If you like history with a personal slant, and you aren’t double parked, pick this one up.Tom T
Great overview of the large time period very significant to the current world civilization. That was a time during which Anglo-Saxon (or as Author named this set of books, English-Speaking people's) model of politics, trade, business and democracy spread around the world and became now the only one that counts.Author describes the process from British point of view and it allows non-British readers to see a different take on events already known to reader. It also allows reader to pick into a mindset of an Author. My favorite part was when Author explains how additional tariffs on American colonists after victory over France were completely justified and, in Author's opinion, were not the reason for revolt. Americans should not start revolution over such minor and reasonable matters - yet they started revolution. Then in the next chapter Author explains how after American Revolution British government rushed to give remaining colonies (Canada) all rights, representation/voice in London and self-government on local and regional issues before these colonies even asked for them. Apparently, despite what Author says in the book, British leaders of that time had found demands of US Founding Fathers very reasonable in the hindsight.
